Brisbane: free and festive holiday events for the entire family

The holiday season is in full swing and Brisbane is holding nothing back. Even the Grinchiest Scrooges may find it difficult to ignore all the merriment floating around.

Here’s a line up of the events not to miss this year…

Christmas Movies in the Park

When: 8 – 17 December 7:00 pm – 10:00 pm
Where: Roma Street Parkland Amphitheatre

If you’re trying to conjure up a romantic date night, family outing or even an end-of-year work gathering – Christmas Movies in the Park is a brilliant event for just about everyone. Pack up a picnic rug and maybe a few cushions. No need to worry about food or beverages, a selection of gourmet food trucks will provide all your dining needs for the evening.

Gold Lotto City Hall Lights

When: 8 – 25 December 7:30 pm
Where: City Hall, 64 Adelaide St, Brisbane City

This reoccurring event is a perfect way to entertain the kids and get the entire family into the merry holiday mood. The spectacular light show will run at intervals from 7:30 pm until midnight, starting on the 8th of December straight through to Christmas Eve. Adults too should take a moment on their way home from work or a night out, to soak in this magical display.

The Enchanted Garden

When: 8 – 17 December 6:30pm – 9:30pm
Where: Roma Street Parkland

No bookings required for this delightful stroll through the Roma Street Spectacle Garden. Lovers of fairy lights, whimsical decorations and classic Christmas tunes won’t want to miss this unique event. The experience has proved to be a holiday favourite amongst Brisbane locals, so arrive early or be prepared for a queue.

Lord Mayor’s Christmas Carols

When: 9 December 4:00 pm – 9:00 pm
Where: Riverstage, Brisbane, Queensland 4000

This beloved Brisbane event showcases an array of Aussie talent. Admission is free, however, once the venue capacity is reached there will be no further admittance. Arrive early if you can.

Voluntary donations can be made at the gate with all funds going to Mater Little Miracles.

The David Jones Christmas Parade

When: 15 – 24 December 7:00 pm
Where: Brisbane City

Watch on as a variety of performers and entertainers march through the city from Edward Street to King George Square. This free event makes for a lovely night out. Adults can enjoy the music and children can get one more glimpse of Santa before he heads ‘back to work’.

South Bank’s Village Christmas Market

When: 15 – 23 December 11:00 am – 8:00 pm
Where: Stanley Street Plaza, South Bank

If you’re nostalgic for a European Christmas, head on down to the Village Christmas Market at South Bank. Find unique last minute gifts, indulge in decadent food and stroll along the cobbled streets pretending for a moment you’re somewhere exotic… though the heat might prohibit such an imaginary getaway.

Free entry and a joy for all ages.

Christmas Fireworks

When: 20 – 23 December 7:45 pm – 8:00 pm
Clem Jones Promenade, South Bank Parklands

There’s just something about summer and fireworks. Hopefully, by this point, all your presents are wrapped and the groceries are bought. Either way, try to take a moment out from all the holiday madness and watch on with your loved ones as the night sky is illuminated with bursts of festive colour.

The best vantage points will be from the Clem Jones Promenade, Streets Beach South Bank and River Quay.
