Video: Queensland has a new hero, and he does his best work in his undies

Brisbane man Daniel McConnell yesterday delivered what has been dubbed “the Aussiest interview ever” as he described stopping a man from fleeing the scene after allegedly crashing into a mate’s nearby shop.

Mr McConnell’s animated account of how he was woken by a crash outside his home and his subsequent pursuit of the alleged driver went viral online within hours yesterday.

“It’s been off its head this morning, mate!” he said. The former showgrounds worker leapt into action about 2am on Thursday when a car smashed into a fish-and-chip shop on Nudgee Rd, Hendra, in Brisbane’s inner northeast.

“I jumped out of bed and all I had (on) was my undies and I walked out the front and I’ve seen the car smashed and I’ve seen the bloke walking back to the car. And so I’ve walked outside and said, ‘What are you doing, mate? You can’t be leaving the scene’.”

Within hours, the internet star had been stopped in the street by a stranger wanting a selfie.

The “top Aussie bloke” cashed in on his new-found fame, with a bidding war between breakfast TV heavyweights Nine and Seven to get the undie-clad hero on TV.

The two stations made offers into the thousands for an exclusive.
