Jessica Mauboy Australia’s Eurovision Candidate for 2018
Jessica Mauboy will represent Australia at the 2018 Eurovision Song Competition.
Mauboy, 27, was the first Australian to perform at Eurovision back in 2014 in an interval performance , before Australia was a participating nation. She told the BBC that ever since that performance “I almost feel like I’ve been waiting for this, like it’s unfinished business.”
The choice of Aussie-favourite Mauboy is a definite shake up from last years decision to send the lesser-known Isaiah Firebrace as the Australian candidate. Although he came in an impressive 9th, it marked Australia’s worst result to date with Guy Sebastian coming in 5th in 2015 and Dami Im nabbing second place in 2016.
With Mauboy, the organisers are clearly pulling out all the stops to maintain, or even better, Australia’s impressive record. Since rising to fame on Australian Idol in 2006, Mauboy has become one of the country’s most successful entertainers, winning multiple Aria awards and pursuing a successful acting career to boot. Add to that her history with Eurovision, and it’s clear that Mauboy is a viable and exciting candidate for Australians to throw their support behind.
Mauboy, who last year became the first indigenous artist to debut at number 1 on the Aria charts, will also be the first indigenous artist to represent Australia in the competition.
While the song that she will perform has yet to be revealed, Mauboy will bring her heritage to the composition, telling SBS that “I want my culture, background and history to definitely affect and be part of the song that I (write),”
While the song won’t be revealed before early 2018, Jessica Mauboy is shaping up to be our best candidate to date.
Bring on Eurovision 2018!
