Jewellery trends: “My 7 predictions for 2018”

Over the past couple of months I’ve been doing a lot of thinking, watching, listening around my favourite subject to find the answer that burning question, “What kind of jewellery will we all be adorning in 2018?”

As both a professional jewellery designer and personal jewellery-tragic I’m excited to let you know that there’s something to suit everyone’s taste this year.

However, if you did twist my arm for a “nutshell’ description, I’d have to say 2018 is the year of Eclectic, Elegant and Bold.

So let’s have a look at some of the jewellery trends destined to be popular in the year that is:

Bold statements

2018 is no exception, it is all about bold, grand, chunky pieces that demand attention and allow the wearer to express their unique personality.  Big earrings have been particularly popular with celebrities … please I don’t want to go back to my 18 year old self wearing hugely heavy earrings pulling painfully at my lobes!

Vintage look

I am very happy to announce that ‘vintage’ is in again (has it ever been completely out?)! The romance and feminity of vintage inspired jewellery (baroque pearls, ornate earrings ..) is a welcome change from the sleek-and-simple (and sometimes non descript) styles that have dominated jewellery in 2017. I just saw the wonderful  ‘The greatest showman’ using baroque earrings which although the period is late 19th/early 20th century will look just right in 2018.

Natural pearls

Pearls are one of the miracles of nature … always different and available in a myriad of shapes and colours from the very organic to the almost perfect! I love all pearls but in 2018 the less popular Tahitian black pearls will be finally the star!

Layered pieces

Chokers were ‘it’ in 2017 but no more … the layered necklaces as made famous by Kim Kardashian are making a strong return (did they ever leave?) and they could become quite addictive. Wear them one at the time or all together or just 2 or 3. Fine chains with charms or simple pendants make this look your own.

Chandelier earrings … shoulder length!

I have always loved vintage inspired chandelier earrings but 2018 will see the arrival of shoulder length earrings elegantly cascading past the shoulders. I love this trend on the red carpet but I am not sure how it will translate for us mere mortals!

Did you say ‘brooch’?

The brooch is officially back on the runways and red carpets … and hopefully 2018 will see younger consumers pinning bejewelled brooches onto their bomber jackets. Can’t wait for a full-blown invasion of the brooches. I am such a fan of the 1930s and 1940s Hollywood films with fabulously glamourous women wearing incredible brooches (that would also double as spectacular pendants!)

Asymmetrical hoop earrings

If 2017 saw the comeback of thick oversized hoop earrings, 2018 will go a step further by making asymmetrical hoop earrings … well trendy! So if you specialise in losing just the one earring, then you will be able to wear them with pride!

If some of the wonderful pieces we’re designing at the moment are to go by, 2018 is sure to be one of the most interesting and exciting years in jewellery design for a long time.

Who knows, maybe the daring actions and lashing of love that a Year of the Dog bring with it are responsible. Whatever the case, I for one am relishing the very thought of it all!

What sort jewellery are you looking forward to this year?
